The Omni Hotel at Independence Park will host an Open House on Monday, June 2, 2008 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. to preview items featured in A Wedding For Alex, the complete wedding package to be auctioned the following week to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The wedding package is worth more than $50,000.

The auction will go live on EBay from May 28 – June 6 and will be awarded to the highest bidder. Final bids coincide with the Foundation’s nationwide Lemonade Days fundraising weekend, June 6-8. The items featured in the auction include a ceremony and reception for up to 135 people, a couture wedding gown, an all-inclusive resort honeymoon in Mexico, photography and videography, rehearsal dinner, bridesmaid’s dresses, beauty treatments, a penthouse suite – and much more.

The Omni will also open its doors to visitors on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. for those wishing to see the hotel, ask questions and learn more about the charity.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $19 million towards fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 80 research projects nationally.

July 2007: Timeless Couture from Pottstown's Toi Sweeney

Toi and dressPottstown resident Toi Sweeney is realizing her dream in the fashion industry. As a former fashion merchandiser, she noticed her knack with products and vendor development through her managerial position with Bloomingdales in New York. Without knowing how to sketch or sew, her eye for fashion led her back to the Art Institute of Philadelphia to further her study of design. Sweeney credits two mentors-Juanita Phillips, a Drexel University instructor, and Karen Kruza, an Art Institute of Philadelphia instructor-for teaching her the skills she utilizes today.

"In the past it has been hard as a designer because it used to be somewhat of a 'private club.' But since the success of the reality television show 'Project Runway,' it has become easier to break into the business," Sweeney said.

Working with prestigious couture designer Zang Toi during an internship, Sweeney was given the honor of working during Fashion Week at Bryant Park, NY, for Zang Toi's spring/summer 2004 collection. From top models and designers spanning the globe, Fashion Week is the highly anticipated annual show where the latest clothing in the industry is revealed.

Sweeney's talent for design has been recognized with an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2004. Fashion Group International NY also nominated her for the Rising Star Award the same year.

With a strong passion for dresses, Sweeney said, "I want to bring back [the art] of dress makers from the 19th century. To me it's about luxurious fabrics and timeless designs."

So she launched her own fashion line HMTQ (Her Majesty The Queen), celebrating women's natural curves with custom-made dresses that exude elegance and grace. ...
